The birth of a baby comes with pleasure and pressure on the mother. That is why at the first encounter with the mother, we welcome and introduce her to the health care workers available before delivery of the baby so that they create mother to health worker relationships.
To pre-empt the anxieties, first-time mothers are explained how labour pains appear and how they will go through the experience of labour.
After birth, the mother is taught how to breastfeed without developing complications, baby bathing and taking care of the cord. While still on the ward, the Midwife will bathe and do cord care as the mother observes and learns.
In our orientation, we tell mothers that while breastfeeding, it is important to hold the baby with its stomach facing hers, holding its head a little higher than the rest of its body. Emphasis is on exclusive breastfeeding because it also offers the magic of Natural Family Planning which will also relieve her of the stress of early conception, and keep the baby healthy, a happy mother and family as well.
