Upper Gastro –Intestinal {GI} endoscopy

Endoscopy is an examination technique that uses fibre optics to visualize intra – luminal structures in the esophagus, gastric/ stomach lumen and duodenum.   • Dysphagia / difficulty swallowing food
  • Odynophagia / failure to swallow any thing i.e not even saliva
  • Persistent or recurrent esophageal reflux / heart burn, despite treatment
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Active or recent upper GI bleeding / vomiting blood
  • Presumed long standing blood loss and iron deficiency anemia
  • Acute caustic / toxic substance ingestion
  • Dysplasia {cancer} surveillance in patients with Barrett’s esophagus
  • Gastric cancer screening in selected patients
  • Screening for upper GI malignancies / cancers in patients with polyposis syndromes or Lynch syndrome
  • Screening for esophageal varices / superficial blood vessels in patients with portal hypertension
  • Screening for squamous cell carcinoma in patients with a history of caustic ingestions
  • Treatment of bleeding from upper GI tract lesions
  • Prophylactic variceal banding
  • Removal of foreign bodies
  • Placement of feeding or drainage tubes
  • Removal of selected polypoid lesions
  • Dilation of stenotic lesions / cases in which the esophagus is partially obstructed
  • Management of achalasia / disorders of swallowing liquids
  • Palliation of stenosis / obstructions due to cancers

The examination is performed in the morning hours {8 – 11 a.m.} with the patient having had an overnight fast i.e. – not eaten or drunk any food or liquid for a period of not less than 6 (six)hours.

The technique is performed under mild sedation i.e light general anesthesia to enhance patient comfort and performer efficiency.
